When Do Grad School Decisions Come Out for Fall 2027?

When Do Grad School Decisions Come Out

Most PhD decisions for Fall 2027 will arrive between late January and March 2027, with February and early March the busiest weeks. Master’s decisions usually run later, from February into April, and rolling programs can decide as late as June. In the UK, many departments decide within a few months of each deadline. For funded offers at most US universities, your final answer is not due until April 15, 2027. Below you’ll find typical windows by degree and country, verified examples from real programs, and what to do while you wait.

Typical decision windows at a glance

These are the windows most applicants report. Individual programs can be earlier or later, so use this as a guide, not a promise.

Program type When decisions usually arrive Notes
US PhD (STEM) Late January to March Programs with December 1 deadlines often move first. Many release in one or two batches.
US PhD (humanities and social sciences) February to March Some admit very small cohorts and decide late, after funding is confirmed.
US PhD with interviews (biomedical, clinical psychology) Interview invites December to February; offers soon after interviews The interview stage is the first real signal.
US research master’s February to April Often after the PhD round in the same department.
US professional master’s February to June, some rolling Earlier rounds usually decide earlier.
Canada (master’s and PhD) February to April Varies a lot by department and funding source.
UK (taught master’s and PhD) Often within a few months of each deadline Funding decisions can come later than the academic offer.

Verified examples from real programs

We checked these on official program pages in November 2026. They show how wide the range is, even among top schools.

School Program What the program says about timing
Stanford University Computer Science PhD Decision letters start going out by mid-February; decisions are made in late February
Stanford University Management Science and Engineering PhD decisions typically by the end of January; MS decisions typically by early March
MIT EECS graduate programs Decisions released in mid-February; financial aid letters between late February and April 1
Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science Full review begins after the deadlines; a very small number of decisions may go out earlier
University of Southern California Viterbi engineering master’s Fall decisions made between January and June; your submission date does not decide when you hear
University of Oxford Graduate courses Department decisions usually about 8 to 10 weeks after the application deadline; Clarendon scholarship offers usually by early April

Notice the pattern: even within one university, PhD and master’s decisions can be more than a month apart.

Why decisions come out in waves

Admissions is not one moment. Most programs move through stages, and each stage can produce news:

  1. Initial screening after the deadline. Some incomplete or clearly unqualified files are cut early.
  2. Faculty review. Committees read files, and in many PhD programs individual faculty look for students to join their labs.
  3. Interviews (only some programs). Invitations are often the first sign of good news.
  4. First-round offers. Programs usually send their strongest offers first so those applicants have time to visit and decide.
  5. Waitlist and later offers. As admitted students decline, places and funding open up for others.
  6. Rejections. Many programs send these last, after their offers are settled.

This is why one applicant hears in February while another applicant to the same program hears in April. For more on what happens behind the scenes, read what happens after you apply to grad school.

When do PhD interview invitations come out?

In fields that interview, such as biomedical sciences and clinical psychology, invitations often go out from December through February. Many engineering and computer science programs interview informally, through a call or video chat with a professor, usually in January or February. Plenty of programs do not interview at all.

If you get an invitation, prepare with our graduate school interview guide. If you don’t, check whether past applicants to your program reported an interview stage before you worry.

Is no news bad news?

Not necessarily. Silence in February is normal, especially because many programs send acceptances before rejections. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Portal changes are not decisions. A status update can mean your file moved to a new reviewer, nothing more.
  • Other applicants’ news is not your news. If someone reports an acceptance, the program may simply be sending offers in batches.
  • Waitlists are real offers in waiting. Many waitlisted applicants are admitted, often in the days around April 15.

When is it okay to email the program?

Wait until the date the program posts for decisions has passed. Stanford’s CS department, for example, asks applicants to email (not call) if they haven’t heard by its posted date. The other good reason to email is a real deadline: if another program needs your answer soon, ask politely when you can expect a decision. Keep it to two or three sentences.

The April 15 deadline: what it means for you

The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) runs the April 15 Resolution. Universities that sign it agree that applicants who receive certain funded offers can take until April 15 to decide. CGS updated the resolution for Fall 2027 admissions and after, mainly to clarify what it covers and how schools can communicate with applicants.

Under the current CGS FAQ:

  • It covers funded offers: full tuition support, a fellowship, a traineeship, or an assistantship, from programs at signatory institutions, for Fall-term starts.
  • It does not cover unfunded offers. A program can ask you to accept an unfunded offer before April 15.
  • Many MBA and professional programs may not follow it, even at signatory universities.
  • Programs may set earlier check-in dates with the graduate dean’s approval. You can ask for more time, and the FAQ says such requests are honored up to April 15. Missing a check-in can cost you the offer, so always reply.
  • After April 15, if you have already accepted one funded offer, you must tell that program in writing before accepting another. You do not need a formal release from the first program.

The simple rule: read the terms in your offer letter, and if anything is unclear, ask the program in writing.

How to track decisions in real time

Universities rarely publish exact release dates. Applicants fill that gap by sharing what they hear. Here is how to use it:

  1. Search the GradCafe results database for your program and look at the dates past applicants reported acceptances, interviews, and rejections. Look at two or three past cycles, not just one.
  2. Start from a school page for an overview of results, for example Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, or the University of Toronto.
  3. Follow your cycle on the GradCafe forum, where applicants post the moment a decision lands.
  4. Post your own result when you hear, at submit your result. Every entry helps someone who is still waiting.

A quick caution: results are self-reported by applicants who choose to post. They are a useful signal of timing, not an official or complete record.

What to do while you wait

  • Prepare for visit days and interviews, even before you’re invited. List your questions about funding, advising, and lab culture.
  • Compare funding as offers arrive. Our guide to fully funded PhD programs explains what a full package should include.
  • Keep late options open. Some master’s and rolling programs still accept applications in spring. See our Fall 2027 deadlines guide.
  • International applicants: plan the visa step. Once you accept, the I-20 or study permit process begins, and summer appointment slots fill quickly.
  • Protect your wellbeing. Checking results ten times a day doesn’t change the outcome. Pick one time a day to check.

Frequently asked questions

When do PhD decisions come out?

Most PhD decisions arrive between late January and March. Programs with early December deadlines often decide first, and many top computer science programs release decisions in February. Waitlist offers can continue into April and beyond.

When do master’s decisions come out?

Usually February to April, often after PhD decisions in the same department. Professional and rolling master’s programs can decide anywhere from January to June.

Do grad schools send acceptances before rejections?

Often, yes. Many programs send their first offers early so admitted students can visit and decide, then send rejections after their class is settled. Silence in February is not a reason to panic.

What is the April 15 deadline for grad school?

It comes from the Council of Graduate Schools’ April 15 Resolution. At signatory institutions, applicants with funded offers (tuition support, a fellowship, a traineeship, or an assistantship) can take until April 15 to accept. It does not cover unfunded offers, and many professional programs don’t follow it.

When should I contact a program about my decision?

After the program’s posted decision date has passed, or if you need an answer before another program’s deadline. Email the graduate coordinator, keep it brief, and avoid calling.

Next steps

Waiting is the hardest part of applying, and it helps to know you’re not waiting alone. Every cycle, applicants share their timelines so others can see what’s coming.
