NYU has no single, university-wide GPA requirement. Each school inside the university sets its own. NYU Tandon publishes a 3.0 minimum for its master’s and PhD programs. Several Steinhardt programs do the same. The Graduate School of Arts and Science publishes no minimum at all. Applicants who report NYU outcomes to The GradCafe show an average undergraduate GPA of 3.75.
That gap, between the floor a school will accept and the GPA people actually arrive with, is the thing worth understanding before you apply. This guide covers both, with each figure traced to where it comes from.
Does NYU have a minimum GPA?
No. There is no number published by NYU as a whole that applies to every applicant.
This surprises people, because most of what gets written about “NYU GPA requirements” is aimed at high school students applying to NYU as undergraduates. For that audience the honest answer is also “no minimum” NYU publishes no cutoff for first-year admission. What it does say is that most entering first-year students arrive with an unweighted GPA of 3.6 or above, with most in the top 10% of their high school class.
The rest of this guide is about graduate admission, master’s and PhD, because that is where the published requirements are specific, where they vary enormously by school, and where almost nobody has written them down in one place.
NYU graduate GPA requirements by school
NYU is a collection of schools with separate admissions offices. A 3.0 that disqualifies you from one may be irrelevant at another.
| School or program | Published GPA minimum | Where it says so |
| NYU Tandon (Engineering) โ all MS and PhD programs | 3.0 on a 4.0 scale | Tandon graduate admissions requirements |
| NYU Steinhardt โ Counseling (online MA), as an example | 3.0 cumulative, from an accredited institution | Program requirements |
| GSAS โ Computer Science (MS and PhD) | None published | GSAS program page |
| GSAS โ Mathematics in Finance (MS) | None published | GSAS program page |
| NYU Stern โ online MS in Management | None published | Stern tests and waivers |
Two things to take from this table.
First, a published minimum is a floor, not a target. Tandon states a 3.0 and also describes its admission as highly selective. Meeting the floor makes your application eligible for review. It does not make it competitive.
Second, “no published minimum” does not mean GPA is ignored. GSAS departments read transcripts closely. It means the department wants room to weigh a 3.3 with a strong research record differently from a 3.3 without one which is good news if your record has something else in it.
The GSAS “3.0” that is not an admissions requirement
You will find a 3.0 attached to GSAS in a lot of places online. It is worth knowing exactly what it refers to, because it is routinely misreported as an admissions cutoff.
GSAS’s policies and procedures manual contains two separate 3.0 figures, and neither one governs admission to a degree program:
- Non-degree applicants are required to hold a 3.0 to enrol in courses without being admitted to a degree.
- Enrolled students are required to maintain a 3.0 to remain in good academic standing once they are already in a program.
Admission itself is left to GSAS and the faculty committee of the department you apply to, working from that department’s own requirements. So if you are below a 3.0 and applying to a GSAS program, you are not automatically disqualified the way you would be at Tandon but you are being judged by a committee with no published floor to appeal to.
Steinhardt is the school where checking matters most. It houses dozens of programs across education, health, music and communications, and the requirements are set program by program. The 3.0 above is one program’s rule, not Steinhardt’s.
What GPA do admitted NYU applicants actually report?
Published minimums tell you who is eligible. Reported outcomes tell you who got in.
Across 14,467 NYU results submitted to The GradCafe, the average reported undergraduate GPA is 3.75. Of those entries, 5,644 were acceptancesย about 39% of everything reported.
You can see the full breakdown, including the most recent decisions with GPAs attached, on the NYU admissions results page.
An important caveat. These numbers come from applicants who chose to report. They are not an official NYU acceptance rate, and they are not a representative sample. People who report tend to be people engaged enough in the process to find a results database which skews the pool toward stronger and more organised applicants. Read 3.75 as “the GPA of a typical person who reports to The GradCafe,” not “the GPA NYU requires.”
The programs with the most NYU reports are:
- Economics โ 952 results (see the reports)
- Computer Science โ 859 results (see the reports)
- Data Science โ 634 results (see the reports)
- English โ 437 results
- Sociology โ 395 results
If you are applying to one of these, the individual reports are more useful than any average. A single entry showing a 3.4 admitted to NYU Data Science tells you more about your odds than a university-wide mean does.
Does NYU require the GRE?
This is where NYU varies most, and where getting it wrong costs you an application cycle. There is no NYU-wide test policy.
| Program | GRE policy |
| Tandon, graduate programs | The admissions requirements page states the GRE is not required for any graduate program โ but confirm on your own program’s page (see the note below the table) |
| GSAS Computer Science (MS and PhD) | Optional โ applicants are not expected to submit scores |
| GSAS MS in Computing, Entrepreneurship and Innovation | Recommended, but not required |
| GSAS MS in Mathematics in Finance | Required (general test); subject test optional |
| Steinhardt Counseling MA (online) | Not required |
| Stern online MS in Management | GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment optional, with no minimum score |
A warning about Tandon specifically. Tandon’s admissions requirements page says the GRE is not required for any of its graduate programs. The NYU Engineering bulletin does not match it: the bulletin’s own program pages disagree with each other, with some listing the GRE as optional and at least one listing it as a required application item. When two official NYU pages conflict, write to the department and get the answer in an email. Do not assume the more convenient page is the current one.
Mathematics in Finance is the one to notice. It sits inside the same graduate school as Computer Science, and it requires a test that Computer Science does not. Check your specific program’s page, in the application year you are applying not a summary written about NYU generally, including this one.
A related note for anyone building a shortlist: our guide to which programs still require the GRE covers how to check this efficiently across a list of schools.
Can you get into NYU grad school with a 3.0 GPA?
Yes, at programs whose floor is 3.0 or which publish none but your application has to do work elsewhere.
Nothing below is a workaround. These are the things admissions committees at NYU and comparable universities say they weigh alongside the transcript:
- An upward trend. A 2.8 across your first two years and a 3.6 across your last two reads very differently from a flat 3.2. If this is your pattern, draw attention to it in your statement rather than hoping it gets noticed.
- Your GPA in the relevant subject. A 3.1 overall with a 3.7 in mathematics is a strong signal for a quantitative program. Calculate it and state it.
- Research or professional evidence. For PhD applications especially, a publication, a conference paper or a sustained research assistantship carries real weight. Mathematics in Finance, for instance, explicitly asks for recommenders who can speak to mathematical and programming ability โ a letter from someone who has seen you do technical work is worth more than a higher number without one.
- A recent, graded record. Taking a few relevant graduate-level courses as a non-degree student and performing well gives a committee current evidence. Several NYU schools, including GSAS, run non-degree options.
- Honest framing. If something specific affected a semester, state it briefly and factually, then move on. Committees read a lot of these.
What none of this does is guarantee an outcome. Programs with no published minimum can still be selective enough that a 3.0 rarely clear and the only reliable way to calibrate is to read what people with profiles like yours actually reported.
How NYU reads an international transcript
If your degree is from outside the US, your GPA is not compared to a 4.0 scale directly.
Several NYU schools require a course-by-course credential evaluation from a service such as WES or ECE, which converts your record into a US equivalent. The Steinhardt counseling program requires this for degrees earned outside the US or Canada, and it is common across NYU. Start it early evaluations take weeks, and a deadline missed waiting for one is a wasted cycle.
English proficiency is separate from GPA and has its own thresholds. Tandon, for example, requires a TOEFL of 90, an IELTS of 7.0, a Duolingo score of 125 or a PTE Academic score of 65, with scores valid for two years and waivers available in defined circumstances.
Where NYU sits against comparable schools
Reported undergraduate GPA averages across a few universities applicants commonly consider alongside NYU:
| School | Reported admit share | Results reported | Avg reported UGPA |
| NYU | 39.0% | 14,467 | 3.75 |
| UCLA | 38.3% | 14,132 | 3.78 |
| Columbia | โ | โ | โ |
| Cornell | โ | โ | โ |
Same caveat as before: these are shares of self-reported outcomes, not official acceptance rates.
FAQ
Does NYU have a minimum GPA for graduate admission?
Not university-wide. NYU Tandon publishes a 3.0 minimum on a 4.0 scale for its master’s and PhD programs, and several Steinhardt programs publish the same. The Graduate School of Arts and Science publishes no admissions minimum the 3.0 often quoted for GSAS applies to non-degree applicants and to the standing of students already enrolled, not to admission. Check your specific program’s admissions page.
What GPA do you need for NYU Tandon?
A 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is the stated minimum for eligibility to any Tandon MS or PhD program. Tandon also describes its admission as highly selective, so a 3.0 makes an application reviewable rather than competitive.
Does NYU require the GRE?
It depends entirely on the program. GSAS Computer Science treats it as optional. GSAS Mathematics in Finance requires the general test. Tandon’s admissions requirements page states it is not required for its graduate programs. Verify on your program’s own page for the year you are applying.
Can I get into NYU grad school with a 3.0 GPA?
It is possible at programs whose published floor is 3.0 or which set none. An upward grade trend, a strong GPA in the relevant subject, research or professional experience, and recent graduate-level coursework all carry weight alongside the transcript. There is no guarantee.
What GPA do admitted NYU applicants actually report?
Across 14,467 NYU results reported to The GradCafe, the average reported undergraduate GPA is 3.75, with about 39% of entries recording an acceptance. These are self-reported and self-selected figures, not official NYU statistics.
Before you apply
The published minimum tells you whether you are eligible. What people with your profile actually reported tells you whether you are competitive and only one of those is available on NYU’s website.
Search the NYU admissions results for your program and filter to the GPAs people reported alongside their outcomes. If you have already heard back from NYU this cycle, submit your resultย it takes two minutes and it is the reason this data exists for the next applicant.
